The next generation Smartphones and other devices with Bluetooth capability will have quadruple the range and double the speed of what is currently available, that’s what the Bluetooth 5 is capable of. That should mean big improvements for the connections between smartphones and smartwatches, wireless headphones, speaker etc.
The upgraded Bluetooth functionality was announced by the Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG) and will be available to device manufacturers as early as September, and with that, we could expect Bluetooth 5 would appear on smartphones for Christmas or early months of 2017.
Main Features of Bluetooth 5
Bluetooth 5 offers 2x data transfer speed of the previous version Bluetooth 4.2. Range will be quadrupled, and data broadcasting capacity will increase by 800%. That should allow various devices to communicate better indoors, outdoors, and across walls, as well as handle connections and demand more efficiently and with less wait times.
Who can use it?
Unlike some Bluetooth upgrades, Bluetooth 5 will require new chips, though it’s backward compatible, old versions won’t be able to utilize the new improvements.
